Spring Valley High School Ceremony for the Restoration of the SVSHS Vietnam 13 Living Memorial

As you drive into the Spring Valley teacher’s parking lot on the east end of the school, you will notice a string of 13 bushes spaced along the bed. These shrubs represent each one of the Spring Valley students who sadly lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Spring Valley’s Vietnam 13 Living Memorial was restored by Douglas Carey’s Social Studies class, and the ceremony took place on Monday, June 13, 2022.

Rockland County Legislator Laurie Santulli, who is also a Spring Valley Social Studies teacher, read a Proclamation, which included the words “whereas it is incumbent upon this legislator to recognize those individuals who sacrifice in the service to our country which enables all Americans to enjoy the freedom we so deeply cherish, and whereas the Vietnam War was a long and divisive conflict between the communist government of North Vietnam and South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States of America, who lost over 58,000 Americans, and whereas 13 Spring Valley High School students paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.”

The ceremony was rife with song and poetry. Mr. Yeferson Melendez Gonzalez played the Star-Spangled Banner and Taps on the trumpet, SIFE Social Studies Bilingual Class sung “Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies”, Ms. Randie Davis sang “His Eyes Are on The Sparrow”, Ms. Kimberly Crespo-Castro, Mr. Geoffrey Goldberg, Ms. Lizbeth Aguilar-Elias, and Ms. Taylor Stevens read the poem “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep”, the Social Studies Honor Society Officers read “The Orange and the Black”, and Spring Valley Security Officer Mr. Wayne King played Amazing Grace on the saxophone.
