Orange & Rockland Awards STEM Grants to East Ramapo Educators

STEM Grant

Five East Ramapo Central School District teachers were awarded Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. STEM Classroom Grants at a reception on May 15. The following educators will use the grant funds to engage students in STEM learning opportunities next year:

 

Janelle Simpson-Luna (Fleetwood Elementary, Grade 2) - Byte-Sized Coders

This is Ms. Simpson-Luna’s second O&R STEM Grant. This year’s Byte-Sized Coders project will help fund a variety of technology tools such as LittleBits Kits, Cubelets Robot Blocks, Stop Motion Animation equipment and props, Makey Makey, Ozobot accessories, and Code & Go Robotic Mice.

 

Benjamin Toper (Hempstead Elementary, Grades 4-5, Social Communications) - Learning Programming Code to Code

This program will introduce students with special needs to the world of coding and robotics through the Ozo robotics program. For those who benefit from a hands-on learning style, this program will help bridge gaps in the areas of spelling, reading, mathematics, science and social studies. From a social communications class perspective, students will focus on their team building, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative teamwork skills.

 

Keri Prusinowski (Hempstead Elementary, Grade 5-6, Special Education, Social Communications) - Communicating with Legos

Students will be building and coding using the LEGO Boost System. This project will help foster students’ critical thinking skills as well as communication skills.

 

Stacey-Anne McDonald (Kakiat STEM Academy, grades 4-6) - Robotic Engineers Buildings Club

This school year, Kakiat STEAM Academy launched an after-school Lego/Robotics Builder's Club to engage students with real-world engineering. With the O&R STEM Classroom Grant, additional resources will be added in order to expand the program and increase the number of participants in the after-school club. The Lego Robotic Engineering will challenge students to use their creativity to design a solution or modify an existing solution to solve real-world problems. The goal is for participants to compete in local robotic events.

 

Jannethe Pardo (Spring Valley High School, Grades 9-12, Living Environment) - STREAM Webs in our Community

Through this program, students will investigate local watersheds in the community, collecting data and analyzing the results in the lab. The students will not only use the STEM pillars but the Reading and the Art portion as well (STREAM).  This program will help students develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, lab and field experience communication, collaboration and engage in the well being of our living environment;
