East Ramapo Cheerleading: Loud and Proud

When it comes to cheerleading, the success of one is the success of all. Performing together in unison fosters a support of one another not often seen in other sports.

“Cheer provides us with a safe place, and we grow into a family together. It’s giving us sisterhood,” explained Randie, Captain of Spring Valley High School’s Cheerleading Squad.

Debra Gishner coaches the Ramapo High School cheerleading squad, and is no doubt their loudest cheerleader and biggest fan. "My cheerleaders are the leaders of tomorrow,” she beams. “They are committed, dedicated, kind and hardworking. We are a drama-free squad that fixes each other's crowns."

This year both high schools had record numbers at cheerleading tryouts, which speaks volumes about the chemistry and energy surrounding these two programs. The district recently invested in new uniforms for many of the East Ramapo teams, including the two cheerleading squads, and this move has made a remarkable difference to the student-athletes. The cheerleading quads not only got new uniforms and pom poms, they also received matching warm-up apparel and backpacks.

“We are excited about the growth that is taking place across East Ramapo’s entire athletic program, including the cheerleading teams,” stated Joe Toombs, Director of Athletics. “Under the guidance of Coach Gishner and Coach Sanchez, the two programs have taken off like wildfire!”

Spring Valley cheerleading is coached by Mariah Sanchez and Wendi Parrinello. The school’s cheer captains, Becky and Makayla, enjoy teaching the squad the cheers from years back, as well as new ones. “We make up new ones as a group or individually,” explains Makayla. “Everyone is free to contribute, because we are truly a team.”

The East Ramapo community is always welcome to come see the two cheerleading squads stomp and shake at the boys' basketball and football games. On January 20th at 6:15pm, there is a rare district mash up with Spring Valley High School Tigers Boys Basketball taking on Ramapo High School Gryphons. Come out and support East Ramapo athletics!
