New York State Regents Examination Requirements for Graduation

Regents Diploma

Score 65 or above on the following 5 required Regents exams: Algebra I CC, English, Global History & Geography, United States History & Government, & 1 Science Exam.

Advanced Regents Diploma

Score 65 or above on the following 9 required Regents exams: Algebra I CC, Geometry, Algebra 2 CC, English, Global History & Geography, United States History & Government, World Languages, & 2 Science Exams.

Local Diploma

No local diplomas will be issued.

Pathways

If a student scores 65 or above on 2 Regents in Science and / or Math, they may use one of those two in lieu of Global History & Geographhy or United States History & Government.

Appeals to Graduate with a Score Lower Than 65 on a Regents Exam

ELLs (formerly ESL) who first entered the United States in 9th grade or above in the 2010 - 2011 school year and thereafter, and who fail, after at least two attempts, to score between 55 - 64 on the Regents Exam in English, became eligible to receive the Local Diploma via appeal if they meet the following conditions.

  • Successfully appeal the Regents Exam in English AND score at least 65 on each of the four remaining required Regents exams; OR
  • Successfully appeal the Regents Exam in English AND score at least 65 on three other required Regents exams AND score between 62 to 64 on one other required Regents exam and successfully appeal that exam.

Other conditions of the appeal include:

  • Attend a course
  • Review as an auditor
  • Demonstrate continued practice with a tutor
  • Attempt the exam 2-3 times prior to the graduating year

Students who have taken and passed certain courses in preparation to take a Regents examination and have a 65 course average but whose highest score on the Regents examination is below but within two points of the 65 passing score may appeal to graduate with a local or Regents diploma using the lower score.  Students who may be eligible for this consideration should speak with their Guidance Counselor for a list of eligibility requirements to further determine if they can pursue this appeal.
