New School Resource Officer Officer Christian Once at Ramapo High School

On Monday, May 20, 2024, Officer Christian Once officially stepped in as Ramapo High School’s newest School Resource Officer (SRO). He took over this role from Officer Robert Navarro, who was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant of the Ramapo Police Department.

Officer Once knows the building well, because he is a proud member of Ramapo’s graduating class of 2012. Since then, he went on to attend RCC and John Jay College, and then joined the New York Police Department where he served four years in the Bronx. For the past five years, Once has been working on patrol for the Town of Ramapo Police Department, stopping by the soccer and football fields occasionally to cheer on his fellow Gryphons.

“The Ramapo Police Department wants to make sure the School Resource Officers really understand the students and the community they are serving,” said Captain Dan Hyman of the Town of Ramapo Police. “Ramapo High School is Once’s alma mater. He speaks both English and Spanish fluently. He has an outgoing and friendly personality, and we are confident that the students will be able to relate to him.”

Officer Once understands what it’s like to be a newcomer and an English Language Learner in a foreign country: He immigrated to the United States from Ecuador when he was six years old.

Officer Once understands the value of education and the role it plays in our students’ futures: He is a product of the East Ramapo Central School District, having attended Fleetwood Elementary, Eldorado Elementary, Hillcrest, Pomona Middle School and Ramapo High School.

While Officer Navarro is a hard act to follow, Officer Once is the right man to fill his Gryphon shoes. He is a great new addition to the East Ramapo family.

Welcome Officer Once!
