Ramapo High School Senior Benjamin Mejia was nominated for the Roger Rees Award for “Outstanding Performance in a Musical”

This spring, Ramapo High School Senior Benjamin Mejia was nominated for the Roger Rees Award for “Outstanding Performance in a Musical”. Mejia earned this achievement on the stage this spring in his performance with the Ramapo Players in the musical “Urinetown, The Musical”. Only two performers were nominated from Rockland County in a pool of 50 nominees from across New York City and the surrounding 7 counties. Mejia is headed to New York City this coming weekend to compete with the other award winners in a performance showcase.

Mejia has been performing with The Ramapo Players since his freshman year, and attributes all of his success to the drama club. “We were always so happy to be in eachothers company, and I was extremely comfortable taking on whatever role, and to sing and dance,” Mejia said.

The Ramapo Players performed “Urinetown, The Musical” in April, and Benjamin Mejia played one of the leads, Officer Lockstock. This clever comical musical is a satire of our legal system, capitalism, social responsibility and so much more.

“Urinetown was such an absurd show, but once we all got into the space, we embraced its absurdity,” Mejia recalls. “Making commentary on the world is something we do all the time together, so to do it on stage came very natural to us, and it was the best!”

Rai Arsa Artha has directed plays at Ramapo for the past 6 years. He is not surprised at all that Mejia earned this award.

“Benji brings 110% to every audition, rehearsal, and performance,” beams Arsa Artha. “Beyond that he is an exceptional leader and source of positivity for everyone around him as the drama club president this year. He absolutely deserves this and we are all so proud of him!”

The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance recognizes distinction in student performance and outstanding achievement in high school musical theater programs in the NYC area. This program is also known as The Roger Rees Awards and was formerly known as The Gershwin Awards.
