Lime Kiln Elementary Celebrates NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION in First In Math

On Friday, May 3, 2024, Lime Kiln Elementary School celebrated the top 100 mathematicians who helped their school become the number one school in the United States using the "First In Math" digital platform. Along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Clarence Ellis, Board of Education member Sherry McGill, state monitor Dr. Shelley Jallow and Lime Kiln Principal Laura Dobson, students were recognized by a distinguished panel of guests that included First In Math owner and developer Robert Sun, New York State Education Commissioner Dr. Betty A. Rosa, New York State Regent Dr. Frances Wills and New York State Senator Bill Weber.

Recognized by the NYS Education Department as a valuable resource to support STEM readiness, First In Math is an online program that uses game-based learning technologies to teach critical math skills, keep students engaged and cultivate math confidence.

At this spirited celebration, special recognition was given to fifth graders Anderson Medina-Aguirre and John Delpe, whose “First in Math” achievements landed them in the top ten of more than a million students nationwide.

Additional accolades went to the classes of Ms. Elizabeth Kilkenny, Ms. Tanya Fuller, Ms. Shalene Agustin and Ms. Jennifer Henry (over 30,000 problems solved); Mr. Brian Vallinino’s class (#7 team nationally, #1 sixth grade team nationally); Ms. Nicole Colarte’s class (#4 team nationally, #1 fourth grade team nationally); and Mr. Lenin Alonzo’s bilingual fifth-grade class, who are the number one team in the nation overall.

The room echoed with enthusiastic and supportive cheers from students, teachers and families, in celebration of Lime Kiln’s tremendous accomplishments. Everyone present contributed to the success of these young achievers, and as Mr. Sun encapsulated during his remarks: “You have learned that to achieve great things, you can’t do it alone.”
