Students Earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy

Students Earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy

Students at Spring Valley and Ramapo High School have been demonstrating language proficiency in order to earn their New York State Seal of Biliteracy.

After months of research and preparation, Tigers and Gryphons stood before a panel to present topics of their choice in both English and a world language, exploring issues ranging from the environment to immigration, gang violence and law enforcement. Following their presentations, panelists asked questions about both their topics and their experiences with biliteracy. The Q&A gave students another opportunity to demonstrate their command of a second language. Panelists also used a rubric to evaluate each presentation, helping to determine students’ proficiency and mastery of the languages.

Students who complete the program earn a special designation on their transcript recognizing biliteracy in Spanish, French Creole and/or French. It’s a distinction that reflects not only language skills, but cultural awareness as well, an asset as they move on to college or careers. Seniors who earn the Seal of Biliteracy will also wear a special cord at graduation.

Congratulations to all of our students for reaching this milestone and showcasing the power of being bilingual.
