Mrs. Susan Goodman, M.S., BCBA
Welcome to Ms. Goodman's Page - Behavior Specialist at Hempstead Elementary School.
A little about me....
I began my teaching career working with students with autism in New York City public schools. During that time, I collaborated with Columbia University to bring Applied Behavior Analysis to New York City Public Schools. I spent two years in Dr. Greer's Comprehensive Application of Behavior Analysis in Schools (CABAS) program and received intensive supervision. That began my love for "all things behavioral" To this day, I credit Dr. Greer and his CABAS program for shaping me into a “strategic scientist of behavior.”
I spent the next 8 years home raising my own 3 children, then slowly returned to the work force consulting part-time in schools in New Jersey and New York.
I was hired as a full-time behavior specialist at East Ramapo Central School Distirct in 2014. I enjoy consulting with Hempstead teachers and staff to develop programs for students with autism. I spend one day a week consulting in other special education programs within the district.
As a behavior specialist, my passions include: providing positive behavior supports so that all students can be educated in the least restricting environment. I'm excited to be part of a distirct that provides students with disabilites the necessary supports so that they can succeed within their own community. I love to build upon classroom management strateties that involve teaching pro-social behaviors, so student with disabilites can have their needs met in a way that they don't look any different from their peers. It is exciting to be involved in ABA in a time when the field is publishing scores of research on strateges that include all children. I have included some of my favorties on my Tier 1 strategies page. Also please see attached paper I wrote called, Punishment - Ethical Considerations that explains why schools should always be engaged in increasing pro-social bahaviors rather then decreasing negative behaviors through punishment.
While not working I enjoy hiking, sking, running and, cooking and eating healthy meals with my family. I am currently pursing a masters as a reading specialist at SUNY New Paltz.
