Health Office/Nursing Services

The East Ramapo School Nurses serve the students in our district in a variety of ways. The school nurses complete all mandated health screening such as height, weight, vision, hearing and scoliosis. They review health records regarding immunizations, arrange for school physicians to examine students for mandated physicals, and assist the students in the certification process for sports participation. Each day they assess the student's needs for first aid and general wellness. The school nurses participate in student education by providing information on bulletin boards as well as informative programs to the students. Some examples of these include health, nutrition, asthma prevention, hand washing and weight control through exercise. It is a challenging job and much more than just putting on band aids.

Please read the following important health information below to learn how you can help us maintain a healthy learning environment for your child.

Important Health Office Information

  • Physical Examinations are required to be submitted for any new entrants, students in Kindergarten, Grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 for the 2023 -2024 school year
  • NYS requires ALL students to be fully immunized. If your child is missing any immunizations a letter will be sent home including vaccine(s) they are missing and when they are due.  If proof of immunization is not provided in a timely manner we will be required to take further action.

If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms, they should stay home and the parent should call the Health Office for further guidance:

  •  Fever of 100 degrees or more
  •  Chills
  •  Shortness of breath
  •  Cough
  •  Body Aches
  •  Sore Throat
  •  Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

A student with influenza must remain out of school until the student is afebrile for 24 hours and all symptoms have resolved. Flu symptoms include stuffy nose, cough, fever, stomach and/or body aches, loss of appetite and lack of energy. If your child returns to school with influenza symptoms or temperature, the school nurse will notify you that your child must go home and remain home until the symptoms are resolved. Students with confirmed influenza usually need to be home 5 - 7 days.
