Bilingual Education

The East Ramapo Central School District offers a variety of Bilingual Education models for elementary and high school students.
Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE)
Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) classes are available in the elementary schools. Students receive instruction in both English and Spanish by a certified teacher with a Bilingual Extension. This is a general education program, therefore, students will have Spanish and English versions of materials used District wide. All instructional resources are aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and are age and grade appropriate.
One Way Dual Language Bilingual (Spanish/English)
The One Way Dual Language instructional model affords ELLs with the opportunity to receive content area instruction in Spanish while also receiving English as New Language (ENL) and English Language Arts instruction. Additionally, ELLs receiving bilingual instruction are also enrolled in Home Language Arts classes. These classes are taught in Spanish and students read and respond to authentic Spanish/Latin American literature.
All ELLs must be enrolled in ENL classes in accordance with the New York State Commissioner's Regulations Part 154. Teachers can use the students’ home language as a manner of supporting their understanding of the instructional content. For example, teachers may restate directions or provide vocabulary in both English and the students’ home language.
