Who is the Board of Education?
East Ramapo is governed by a Board of Education composed of nine members elected by the community, each for a term of three years. The Board is responsible for the scope, depth and quality of education in the district. It is the policy making body for the school district. Individuals who serve on the Board receive no salary for their service provided to the community. Voting for school board representatives takes place on the same day as the annual school budget vote.
As elected officials they
- Select a Superintendent of Schools as the chief executive officer of the District
- Adopt goals and objectives
- Evaluate the effectiveness of district programs and services
- Establish policies for the operation of the district
- Appoint professional and non-certificated personnel and set salaries
- Develop a budget consistent with educational needs and community resources
- Levy taxes
- Set educational policy
- Approve the appointment of all school district personnel and contracts
- Communicate the progress and needs of the District to the community, educational governing boards and legislators
Board Members
The nine Board members are elected to staggered three-year terms.
- Shimon Rose, President, Ward 4, a Chestnut Ridge resident, is serving his second term, which will expire in 2027
- Sherry McGill, Vice-President, Ward 3, a Spring Valley resident, is serving her second term, which will expire in 2026
- Sabrina Charles-Pierre, Ward 2, a Spring Valley resident, is serving a term which will expire in 2025.
- Moshe Samuel Feder, Ward 8, a Pomona resident, is serving his first term on the Board, which will expire in 2026.
- Yitzchok Gruber, Ward 6, a Monsey resident, is serving his first term on the Board, which will expire in 2025
- Moses Koth, Ward 7, a Monsey resident, was elected to a first term on the Board, which will expire in 2027.
- Simon Koth, Ward 5, a Monsey resident, is serving his second term on the Board which will expire in 2026.
- Ephraim Weissmandl, Ward 9, a Monsey resident, was re-elected in May 2022, to a term which will expire in 2025.
- Eric Young-Mercer Ward 1, a Spring Valley resident, elected to his first term in 2024, which will expire in 2027.
Who is the District Clerk?
The District Clerk has multiple responsibilities within the District:
- Secretary to the Board of Education, preparing agendas and minutes for Board meetings.
- Maintain Board Policy Manual
- Records Access Officer for the District, responsible for responding to Freedom of Information Law requests.
- Running School elections, receiving petitions for School Board candidates, registering voters for School votes, and sending Absentee ballots for School votes.
