Running for Board of Education
In accordance with New York State Executive Order 202.26 issued on May 1, 2020, the annual district meeting and election has been adjourned and rescheduled until June 9, 2020. Any individual who wishes to be a candidate for the Board of Education of the East Ramapo Central School District must meet certain legal requirements to be qualified for membership on a school board.

If you wish to be a candidate for the partial term vacancy that will occur on the Board as of June 10, 2020 (term ending June 30, 2022) or for one of the 3 vacancies that will occur on the Board as of July 1, 2020 (terms ending June 30, 2023), you must complete the petition form in order to be listed on the ballot for the District’s annual meeting and election [Note that candidates will be listed on the ballots alphabetically].

The election for School Board members will be held - June 9, 2020
A person is qualified to be a candidate for the Board of Education if he or she meets the following criteria:
All candidates must file petitions with the District Clerk. Petitions are available on the District website under District Clerk, Forms on any day Each petition must be completed in full, including declaration of the seat for which you intend to run. Signatures are not required for the June 9, 2020 election. A candidate may petition for only one seat.The Board members whose three-year terms expire June 30, 2020 are Mark Berkowitz, Joel Freilich, and Harry Grossman.There is also a seat open to fulfill the remaning term, June 10, 2020 to June 30, 2022, for seat currently filled on an interim basis by Carole Anderson.
- Must be able to read and write
Must be a qualified voter of the School District (U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and not adjudged incompetent)
Must be and have been a resident of the School District for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one year prior to the election
May not have been removed from any School District office within the preceding one year
May not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the same family
May not be a current employee of the school board
- May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office
Petitions must be e-mailed to the District Clerk at KKivi@ercsd.org no later than 5:00 pm on Monday, May 11, 2020. Completed petitions may be scanned and e-mailed or send a photo of the completed form. Ballot placement will be done alphabetically.
All candidates must file three sworn or affirmed statements with both the District Clerk and the NYS Commissioner of Education when total campaign expenditures and contributions (made by candidates or on their behalf) exceed $500.00. When campaign expenditures and contributions are less than $500.00, the candidate must file a sworn statement only with the District Clerk. The filing dates will be updated shortly.
