Calabrese Chronicle

Today marks the 2nd edition of Calabrese Chronicle. Hope you enjoyed reading the 1st edition. This newsletter will be brought to you frequently, letting you know what your child is learning, upcoming events, class news, and helpful reminders. Also, you can look daily on my web page for homework and any notes or messages for your child.
What is my child learning?
- Reading / ELA- practicing strategies to find the Theme in literature, such as in Aesop Fables. The students have been working on completing short answers in response to reading and constructing an essay in response to literature as well.
- Science – studying the food web and the food chain, as well, as eating healthy foods.
- Social Studies – studying the Dutch Colony: comparing the life of a child in the Dutch Colonial Times with that of a child in 2013.
- Math- finding equivalent fractions / adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers and improper fractions. Assessment will be on Friday March 22nd.
Class News
We are happy to welcome another new student, Joselin Castillo-Guaman. Joselin comes to us from Eldorado School.
Upcoming Events
- March 22nd is our next Oratory Contest. If you are available we would love for you to come to our assembly.
- ELA Testing Date: April 16-18, 2013
- Math Testing Dates: April 24-26
- Science Testing Date: Hands-on performance test dates vary from May 22-31st
- Science Written Test: June 3rd
- Picture Day!!! April 9th
- Family Reading Night will be re-scheduled due to the predicted snow.
Reminders
- Ask your child what supplies they need. The list is on Mrs. Calabrese’s web page.
- Make sure they go on Raz-Kids, every night.
- please have them practice their math facts
- read for at least 20 minutes every day.

Today marks the birthday of George Washington, our first president of the United States and the first edition of the Calabrese Chronicle. This newsletter will be brought to you frequently, letting you know what your child is learning, upcoming events, class news, and helpful reminders.
What is my child learning?
Reading / ELA- practicing strategies to find the Main Idea and Supporting Details, reading authentic literature, such as Aesop Fables, text structure and text features.
Science – studying the Digestive System (ask your child why it is important not to talk while they are eating or chewing food?)
Social Studies – Studying the Explorers who influenced New York (go ahead and ask your child who is Jacque Cartier?)
Math- finding equivalent fractions / adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators
Ask your child: What does “SWBAT” mean?
Class News
Sadly, we had to say farewell to one of our classmates, Melani, who moved to Lime Kiln. We are happy to welcome our new student, Moeez Khan to our class. Also this week we had a class visitor, my daughter Jillian. The children made both Moeez and Jillian feel right at home.
Upcoming Events
March 13th is our next Oratory Contest. If you are available we would love for you to come to our assembly.
Thank you to those who came out to Mystery Night, we had a lot of fun.
Reminders
Ask your child what supplies they need. Make sure they go on Raz-Kids, every night. Also, please have them practice their math facts and read for at least 20 minutes every day.
